Nourishing Reading Guide - February 2022
Binge some of my latest food stories and graze some of my go-to reads.
I recently completed my first food writing course 🎉
The lovely space curated by Naomi Tomsky offers a masterclass in nurturing your voice and being hella critical (mainly in a good way) about food stories!
It got me thinking a lot about how to build a community of avid food readers. So, to celebrate surpassing 30 subscribers🎉 I plan to start sharing Nourishing Reading Guides!
Every so often I’ll share some of my favorite write-ups and other literature I’m loving.
Feel free to share other reads you’ve loved in the comments below!
Recently Published Pieces I Love (& Wrote!)
"The griot taco marked the first innovation that Charles felt incredibly excited about. The taco begins with a grilled flour tortilla and crunchy fried griot served at the base. Griot is a traditional Haitian dish with pork marinated in sour oranges and epis, a Haitian marinade."
"Once marinated, the juicy pork bites get fried to a crispy golden brown. The taco is finished with lettuce and pikliz, a notoriously delicious Haitian spicy-pickled slaw. But, of course, a taco always needs a good sauce, and this one has a buttermilk-based “island sauce,” shares Charles, that unifies all of the flavors in the taco."
"Against all odds, Troop 6000 has flourished, and as young entrepreneurs, going from selling cookies out of one shelter in Queens to engaging girls in over 20 shelters across all five boroughs to create a cookie empire."
"While there is still a long road ahead for achieving justice for Black farmers, the committee supporting the legislation remains hopeful. Senator Booker will be joined by lawmakers Kirsten Gillibrand, Tina Smith, Reverend Raphael Warnock, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Richard Blumenthal on the act. Senator Booker added, “I am proud to reintroduce this landmark legislation alongside my colleagues as we work to right these wrongs and empower a new generation of Black farmers.”
A Deadly Citrus Tree Disease Is Wreaking Havoc on California Fruit
"California earns roughly $7 billion in citrus production, employing over 22,000 people. The fatal plant diseases threaten the livelihoods of thousands of workers and pose risks for citrus price hikes. If California has learned anything from Florida's HLB devastation, government officials need to act fast to avoid a potential citrus disaster."
Stories I’m Reading (& Loving!)
Randall Kenan, phew, where do I start?! It will take an entire post to sift through this reading. But I will leave you with this: Randall was ahead of his time. His ability to make you salivate while reading about his epicurean experiences growing up in the south is unbelievable.
This excerpt from the book has to be my favorite (it’s also the main quote I put on my vision board this year lol).
It has genuinely been sticking with me as a 20-something-year-old trying to navigate life, constantly battling imposter syndrome and am-I-good-enough thoughts:
“You will be like ravens. Free to pick and choose, beautiful, raucous, difficult to control, both tricker and avatar. Y’all aint gonna let nobody hold you down. Hold you down. Hold you down.
Did you know, once upon a time, Black folk could fly? Or so it has been said. A hidden truth. A metaphor. A way of looking at yourself and the world. Remember that when you think you are stuck in the mud.”
Take care of yourselves 🖤
